From being the favorite of Rameses II (c. 1300 BC) to a gem, which wowed the Mughal nobility in India, the emerald has come a long way. From the 'New World' of Columbia and Sri Lanka to Spain and finally to India, this is a gem which has travelled the seven seas.
Legend has it that an emerald bestows on its owner eloquence and persuasiveness. The Romans believed that the emerald symbolizes the reproductive forces of nature and dedicated it to Venus. On the other hand, the emerald was considered to be an enemy of sexual passion. In thirteenth century, Albert Magnus wrote that when King Bela of Hungary embraced his wife, his magnificent emerald broke into pieces.
