Opal derives from the Sanskrit word Upala and Latin Opalus, meaning "precious stone". Opal is considered to be the Queen of Gems, due to its breathtaking beauty.
The oldest Opal mine was found at Czervenitza in former Czechoslovakia, which was probably the source of opals for Romans. The fire Opal was known to Aztecs and introduced in Europe by the Spanish. It was Queen Victoria though, who popularized black and white Opals by giving Opal jewelry to all her children.
The Opal was considered as a stone of love and hope by Romans. It has also been considered as a talisman to be worn by thieves and spies.
The characteristic feature of a gem Opal is the play of colors, whereas the fire Opal is judged by the clarity of the gem and intensity of color.
