Bali is one of the 33 provinces of Indonesia. It is only a small island of 2.147 square miles in area, lying to the east of Java and separated from the large island by a narrow strait of water.It is largely mountainous and of volcanic origin, the central part of the island being dominated by high volcanic peaks, with the majestic cone shaped mount Agung, which last erupted in 1963, dominating the eastern section. To the south and to the north of these mountains lie the fertile plains which have supported the complex Hindu Balinese culture and social system, base on irrigated wet-rice cultivation.
The present population of Bali is estimated to be 2, 2 million people. It is the second most densely populated island in Indonesia and because of population pressures, many Balinese have migrated to other parts of Indonesia such as Sumatra, Borneo and the Celebes. The strength of Balinese traditions and beliefs is illustrated by the fact that in these new areas, the people have set up communities essentially the same as those in Bali. Temples have been built and the old forms of worship are strictly adhered too. Bali is noted for the beauty and variety of its scenery.
To the south, the high limestone cliffs of the arid peninsula known as the ?Bukit? provide a spectacular setting for the temple of Uluwatu.
The central plains are intensively cultivated and here the terraced rice fields are the dominant feature of the landscape. The rivers which bring the water to irrigate the rice fields come down from the mountains in deep ravines overgrown with lush tropical vegetation. Small temples, holy bathing places, and ancient monuments are found along the river courses. The villages are set amongst groves of shady coconut palms and often one comes across areas of untouched, uncultivated virgin jungle, such as at the Holy-Monkey forest at Sangeh. The beaches are clean and uncluttered, perfect for sunbathing and swimming. They save from all the dangers usually associated with swimming in tropical water.
The mountains, floating amongst the cloud, are an area of tall forest trees and steep sided deep valleys, contrasted with the stark scenery around the volcanoes, some of which are still active. To these wide varieties of landscape, the Balinese people add the color of their festivals, ceremonies, music, art, and dance.
