It all started over a cup of coffee in November 1999. Six people from the opal industry, business and technology sectors met in Lightning Ridge, Australia, to discuss whether e-commerce would help the opal industry. We found that consumers were paying too much for opal, that they had little in the way of choice, and to top it all off, miners were receiving an unjustifiably small slice of the retail price.

We knew the Internet could change all of that. The name ?Eopal? was hatched at the meeting. We had a simple goal: to give consumers access to thousands of value-for-money opals, and to share a greater proportion of the retail price with miners. A classic win-win situation.

The company was then formed, and in July 2000 our first full-time staff joined us. Over the following months we worked with our opal suppliers to develop a prototype web site, and devise photography methods that could reliably show what each opal looked like.

In January 2001 we established additional offices in Lightning Ridge, and proceeded to list several hundred opals. In April 2001 we held our formal launch event, and the web site went live at that time.

Over the following months, our trading revenue gradually grew. We continued to list new products, and by the end of 2001, had over 1, 000 products available.

By October 2002 we had established our custom jewellery service and in the same month shipped its first order. In the same month, we also attended Coober Pedy to participate in the formation of the Australian Opal E-Business Association.

We started 2003 with the listing of almost 1, 000 ammolite stones for the launch of our ammolite partnership with American Gem Corp. The ammolite range was an instant hit, and has remained extremely popular. Owing to our growth, in mid-2003 we relocated to larger premises and welcomed additional staff.

2004 saw the addition of ammolite jewellery to our product range. We also carefully reviewed our opal supply chain towards the end of the year, and in 2005 we started adding a massive new collection of loose opals in response to this review and sustained customer demand for quality, value-for-money loose opal stones.

More than five years on, we continue to enjoy strong growth and a loyal following of customers, suppliers and staff. We've now shipped thousands of products to every corner of the globe, have more than 7, 000 readers of our monthly newsletter, and actively support many industry events and Government initiatives.
