The Gem & Jewellery Export Promotion Council is an all - India apex body representing more than 7000 jewellers from India. Set up in 1966, it operates under the supervision of the Ministry of Commerce, Government of India and elected representatives of the industry. The Council is a non-profit organisation involved with service to the nation.

Since time immemorial, India has been synonymous with gems and jewellery, India has given the world some of the most rarest and mystic diamonds. India was, at one time, the undisputed leader in this field. Diamond production in India can be, traced back to almost the 8th century BC, when the first ever diamond in the world was mined in India. Some of the superlative, most famous diamonds of the world like the Great Moghul, Kohinoor, Hope, Pitt, Nizam, Idol's Eye, Orloff, etc. Were born in India. In fact, India was the sole producer and supplier of diamonds to the world before the discovery of Brazilian fields in the 17th century and the later emergence of South Africa, Russia and Australia, as major producers.

The success story of the Indian diamond industry is unique. From humble beginnings, India rose to become the world leader in a span of just 2 decades. India now accounts for nearly 55% of world net exports of cut & polished diamonds in value terms, 90% in terms of pieces and 80% by caratage. No other export segment of the country has such a significant share in the world market. It is rightly said that India has 'democratised' diamonds, which in the past were the exclusive preserve of only the rich and famous.

This achievement of the Indian diamond manufacturing centre has been possible due to the fortuitous combination of the skills of the Indian workforce and the untiring and unflagging efforts of the Indian diamantaire, supported by progressive Government policies.

India's strength lies in the 2 million highly skilled workforce in the country in the gem & jewellery sector, out of which 1 million are exclusively engaged in export production, who virtually carved exclusive fancy stones out of near gem quality roughs. The workforce is most economic and therefore most competitive when compared with any other cutting center in the world. No other country in the world can claim of such a huge highly skilled competitive labour force, which now works on the latest state-of-the-art technology.
