Model maker Bermark Design Ltd of Bangkok reports a growing customer base, owing to a library of over 10, 000 designs at competitive prices.

The company is now producing between 200 and 300 new models each month. The designs can be viewed at the company showroom in Gems Tower in Bangkok and at many international jewellery shows, including the Bangkok, Hong Kong and Moscow jewellery fairs in September.

Managing Director, Charles Berman, was the owner of a major Canadian jewellery manufacturing company for 20 years before establishing his model-making company in Thailand in 1996.

My company in Canada had a reputation for great designs and excellent quality. I was privileged to be able to bring my production manager, Irena Nowak, with me when I decided on this change of career. It took us three to four years of hard work, but now we have an excellent team of designers and model-makers in place, and our quality is as good as or better than that of most of our competitors in North America or Europe.

Although Mr. Berman had extensive experience as a Canadian Manufacturer, it was nothing compared to what he has seen and experienced in his new home in Asia. My move to Bangkok has opened my eyes to the world of jewellery. We have customers from all over the world, so we have to produce a varied range of models to suit their needs. Newness is the key to our business survival. We have been most fortunate in having both a pool of excellent local Thai designers and relationships with designers in major markets
Around the world.

He added For a manufacturer to be successful he must have a lot of beautiful new designs to show his customers. Often, manufacturers get bogged down with requests from their major customers, and they cannot make enough new designs for their new product range. That's where we come in, because we are exclusively a design and model-making company, with thousands of new models ready to mold and put right into their lines.

For jewellery to be really beautiful to a manufacturer it must not only look good, but also have a professionally made model while not being too expensive. This is where our past experience as a manufacturer helps us. We make our models bearing in mind that many of our customers wax set stone, and need to supply jewellery as light in weight as possible to maintain competitive pricing.

We have stringent requirements on shank and the thickness of walls. If the model is right, then the rest of the manufacturing process is easier and cheaper."

Making models in Bangkok enabled Bermark Design to be price-competitive. The cost of making a master model in North America or Europe is high. The labour pools are small and expensive, so the model makers charge accordingly. We sell models for a fraction of what it would cost a manufacturer. Depending on the market, our models cost manufacturers from 20 percent to 50 percent of what it would take to design and build models on their own.

That is why l made the move to Bangkok. I saw the potential to combine my knowledge and experience in jewellery with Thai creative talent and low overheads to create a specialized business in the industry I love.

But I never recommend that customers use us for all their model needs. Every manufacturer needs special models for special customers, and often they have rush requirements. We are just a good source of designs and models, commercially conceived, that augment the product mix of a successful manufacturer.
