Star Mountain Trading Company is a family business owned and operated by husband and wife team, April Redbird and Gregory Jaekel.
We have two children together and separately. The oldest is Karim, and the youngest is Jasmin. She is a born retailer who already has sidewalk sales on Saturday where she sells her $1.00 items gleaned from sale tables at the gem shows we go to every year.
We began quite inauspiciously over 15 years ago selling at a table at the fleamarket in Santa Fe. We had one table on the back row, after a time we moved up to three tables in the center row, later we added a small store in the east mountains of the Albuquerque area. In 1995 an offer of a professorship at a state college for my wife April lured us south to Silver City, New Mexico where we opened our 1800 square ft. Store right on the main drag.
In 1999 we bought a new building and moved in to it. It is a spacious 5250 square feet large. It is so large that we have two addresses for the front and the back doors. We built 2 studios for April, she has recently taken up lampworking after studying with famous European glassmaker Kate-Drew Wilkerson. Making beads is her new passion. We also created offices for both of us and a play room for Jasmine who has nearly outgrown the notion of a playroom.
April has since left academia. A beader for thirty years, the lure of having her own bead store was just too strong and she has left academia for the satisfaction of being a jewelry designer, bead maker, and small business owner.
My name is Greg and I am the main sales person, Mary is our part-timer. April sometimes works at selling as well.
April is the Jill of all trades, designing jewelry, doing the windows, creating the advertising and with the help of a web designer creating this web page too.
Being a Mom and Pop retail store that is open 6 days a week, and the middle aged parents of an active small child, keeps us pretty busy.
Things being as they are we don’t have a really spiffy bead catalog to offer you at this time, but we are working on it. The biggest problem with a paper catalog is that it is obsolete by the time it is printed. Unless you have a huge amount of each kind of bead. In the meantime, we will try to find the beads you need, and you should feel free to email us with any questions that you might have. We are currently importing beads directly from the Czech Republic and from India so we have a lot of beads, far more than are on our website. We are not wholesalers but will do our best to give quantity discounts that come close to wholesale prices.
We will be able to scan or photograph items with our handy new digital camera that you have questions about and send them as attachments to you in your e-mail.
